Schola Hungarica: Polyphonic Vespers for Christmas
Gregorian Chants from Hungary 1
Christmas
Schola Hungarica - Janka Szendrei & Laszlo Dobszay
Hungaroton HCD 11477 (LP issued in 1978, This CD issued in 1994)
Recording date: April 1970
This is a recording of liturgical music for Christmas, the pieces being extracted from Hungarian sources of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries.
The Schola Hungarica continues to maintain superb discipline and responsiveness. Men, women, and children usually sing in alternation rather than together, always in effective contrast, but they make a superb polyphonic ensemble. Occasional solos are excellent. The polyphony is rare and rewarding, not to be missed.
