Schubert: Forellen-Quintett, Der Tod und das Mädchen - Emil Gilels, Amadeus Quartet, Rainer Zepperitz

Franz Schubert:
Forellen-Quintett, Der Tod und das Mädchen (Quartett No. 14 D 810)
Emil Gilels, Amadeus Quartet, Rainer Zepperitz
Deutsche Grammophon | The Originals | Int. Release 06 Jan. 1997

The Trout receives a serious, rather than a light-hearted, reading: the opening of the Scherzo, indeed, is almost fierce, and accents everywhere tend to be more forceful than one normally expects. Though the strings sound a trifle further from the microphone, the balance with the piano is excellent, and Gilels's sensitivity is much to be admired: there is never any suggestion of his trying to turn the work into a quasi-concerto. Only the finale leads one in places to question the degree of heftiness of the approach.
Gramophone, Nov. 1984

The Amadeus Quartet give a fine performance of the work [Quartet in D minor, " Death and the Maiden"] : from the very first bars it is clear that the drama inherent in the music is going to be effectively played out. Nor are they reluctant to play lyrically in the appropriate sections, and throughout they phrase most beautifully. The balance, too, is good ; just occasionally a little more of the second violin, when it has a leading part, might be something of an advantage.
Gramophone, Jan. 1954
