Johann Nepomuk Hummel: Flute Sonatas
Carmen Picard, Lise Daoust, Elizabeth Dolin
Penguin Guide, January 2009
Hummel’s elegant, easy-going melodic style seems custom-made for the flute, and his three lightweight sonatas are lacking in neither diversity nor charm. The Grand rondeau brillant is entertainingly like a Weber display piece. The performances on Naxos are both sunny and technically felicitous, and are warmly recorded. The Trio is an ingenuous set of variations on a Russian folk tune which lends itself to sparkling divisions. Here there is plenty of bustle before the work ends peacefully.
