Reviews :

It was Heinz Holliger and friends who began the "Zelenka Renaissance," if you can call it that, way back in the early 1970s with their Archiv recording of these Trio Sonatas. These pieces are, without question, the finest works of their type produced during the Baroque period. Their style is as instantly recognizable as it is impossible to describe. "Quirky" might sum it up best: the tunes are ear-catching, the rhythmic complexities years---indeed centuries---ahead of their time, and the harmonies utterly personal and expressive. The only thing that has kept these works from the Baroque "Top Ten" is their appalling difficulty in performance (just listen to the bassoon in Sonata No. 5, and you'll get the idea). For this reason, it's not surprising that Holliger wanted to take another shot at music that he has lived with for nearly 40 years, and his performances (which include several members of his original Archiv team) are an improvement in every way. Where before he was content to more or less get through the notes, here he and his partners play with such ease and sovereign command, and are so beautifully recorded, that this set easily becomes the reference edition for this marvelous music. Essential.
Stereophile com : Robert Levine : 2006 Records To Die For
One of the more heartening developments in recent years is that the surviving work of Bohemian composer Jan Dismas Zelenka (1679–1745), much of which was destroyed in WWII, has finally begun to enter the standard repertoire. Zelenka was greatly respected by Telemann and J.S. Bach, and these six trio sonatas will tell you why. They have the singing, melodic, headlong quality of Telemann at his best, a contrapuntal density that is at least the match of Bach's, and an almost shocking chromaticism that Bach himself seldom essayed. The sonatas are virtually bottomless in their sophistication and complexity, while being immediately engaging and accessible on first hearing. These four soloists and their very beefy continuo section play the hell out of these remarkable works. I have seldom heard such audible evidence of seven musicians listening to each other with an intensity of attention that is almost physically solid. The sound is rich, warm, full-bodied, close-miked, and very vivid, as if heard from the perspective of the septet's phantom eighth member, the listener—perfectly appropriate for music written not for audiences but for the musicians who performed it.
The Independent : Rob Cowan - Friday, 7 May 1999
The chance to relish a fresh recording of music by the 18th-century Bohemian master Jan Dismas Zelenka cannot be taken for granted. Some years ago, Deutsche Grammophon made an unexpected killing with a two-disc set of Zelenka's six perennially astonishing trio sonatas. Others followed, but ECM's new set, with the oboists Heinz Holliger and Maurice Bourgue, the violinist Thomas Zehetmair, Klaus Stoll on double bass, Jonathan Rubin on lute and Christine Jaccottet on harpsichord, showcases such aristocratic playing, and such a ravishing blend of sonorities, that it should henceforth earn top billing for anyone interested in this repertoire.
