This is the first recording of Handel's last Italian opera, premiered
in London in November 1741. .. This rarely heard piece remains a
Baroque landmark every Handelian will want to own. In the title role,
the German soprano Simone Kermes leads a strong cast with lavish

G. F. Handel: Athalia - J. Sutherland, E. Kirkby, J. Bowman, A. Jones, C. Hogwood / The Academy of Ancient Music - 2CDs -1986
"The first great English oratorio. It was a brillant stroke of imagination to ask Dame Joan Sutherland to take the title-role ... her singing is truly magnificent in its grandeur and its clear, bell-like, perfectly focused tone. As a whole these two discs, excellently recorded, give an admirable and often striking realization of this work, and I warmly recommend it" - Gramophone
'Hogwood's splendid set is cast from strength, with Dame Joan Sutherland's richly vibrant singing contrasting with the pure silver of Emma Kirkby, not to mention the celestial treble of Aled Jones' - Peguin Guide
